Some varieties like Herniaria Glabra are also drought and deer resistant, can be driven over twice a day without dying, and can grown in very poor soil including gravel. Can't wait to see how it all progresses over the years. I do plan on having a small patch of green grass mixed with clover and likely a few other "weeds" in my back (or front) yard. It will still be nice to walk on and sit on, the clover will provide nitrogen for the grass, I will keep the green area mowed high (instead of golf course short), and I may even have my (future) geese or sheep to the mowing for me instead. I will not spray pesticides and I will likely only fertilize with very slow release or organic only fertilizers. It will be just a part of the larger garden area. It will not be very large though. Does that answer your question a bit?John K (Temperate Climate Permaculture)https://www.blogger.com/profile/01349177939122793240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204378405679327332.post-70378269171363806422011-08-12T13:51:44.772+00:002011-08-12T13:51:44.772+00:00Very valid points and I agree on many of them. But, knowing that you have a dog and kids, what is your recommendation then for both making the most of the land that you have (ie - getting rid of lawn) and still having outdoor space for the dog(s) to run and kids to play while at home. (Taking into consideration that yes, walks and parks and things of that nature are available but at times home is the place to be)DTaylornoreply@blogger.com
